No Meeting Tonight

Hello Everybody,

We just wanted to let you know that we will not be having a meeting tonight, Tuesday May 5th. However, we will be co-hosting a great event next week. Next Wednesday, May 13th at 2:30pm, the Chief Operating Officer of Blizzard Entertainment will be coming to speak in Campbell Hall. This event is FREE and open to the entire campus. Come out with your friends and listen to Mr. Paul Sams discuss his career path, which began at UCSB and has landed him a top executive role at one of the world’s leading gaming companies. Paid BEA members also have the opportunity to meet with Mr. Sams before his lecture in small group setting. This will take place in North Hall (room to be determined) from 1:00pm to 2:00pm on the 13th. Refreshments will be provided. Lunch with Former Chevron CFO, Wednesday April 22nd

Hello Members,

We just wanted to remind all of you that the BEA will be having lunch with former Chevron Chief Financial Officer Mr. Stephen Crowe this coming Wednesday, April 22nd, at noon. The lunch will be held at the Faculty Lounge and all expenses will be taken care of. If you are interested in attending this lunch you must RSVP as soon as possible, as space is very limited. In your RSVP please include a short description of your career interests for us to pass along to Mr. Crowe.

Here are some things that you might expect Mr. Crowe to discuss over lunch:

“Given my 36 years with Chevron and retiring as CFO at the end of last year, areas of interest might include:
- global supply and demand for energy
- considerations in running an international petroleum company
- growth - organic and via mergers and acquisitions
- financial structure issues
- priorities for a CFO
- compliance/internal controls

Hello Everyone!

We hope your quarter has been going well and that you will be able to make it out for another Tuesday night BEA meeting. Our guest speaker this week is Adam Dean, the President of Silicon Valley Bank. Adam Dean oversees SVB Asset Management and has more than 10 years of experience in the financial industry, assisting clients with investment and financing strategies. He also has 15 years of experience in the technology and life science sectors.

Prior to joining Silicon Valley Bank, Mr. Dean was Vice President of Equity Capital Markets at Wells Fargo Securities where he was responsible for building and managing the firm’s private equity investment group. His banking and investment management experience is focused on technology and life science firms ranging from small development stage companies to public stage firms. Previously Mr. Dean worked as a life sciences strategic and investment analyst with Pacific Growth Equities and Bay City Capital.

Mr. Dean earned his Masters in Business Administration at the University of San Francisco’s School of Business and Management and a bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of California at Santa Barbara. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.

First Spring Quarter Meeting: Tuesday April 7th, 6pm, HSSB 1174

Hello BEA Members,

We hope you all enjoyed your break and are ready to get back into the swing of things. We will be hosting our first meeting of the quarter this coming Tuesday, April 7th, from 6:00-7:30pm in HSSB 1174 (Note: this quarter’s meeting location and time has changed from last quarter). In coordination with A.S. Investment Advisory Committee, we will be hosting a panel of guests who will be sharing their insight on the world of investment banking, corporate finance, and business development, particularly how they each started their careers upon graduating from UCSB (Yes, our three panel members are all former gauchos). As always food and drink will be served.

Additionally, the speakers have agreed to attend a casual dinner with us at The Elephant Bar when this event concludes around 7:30pm. For anyone interested in coming along please RSVP asap at ucsbbea@gmail.com, as space is limited. Transportation will be provided.

No Meeting This Week

February 16th, 2009

We will not be having a Tuesday night meeting this week. Our next Tuesday night lecture will be next week, February 24th, at 7pm in TD 1701. More info on this event to come.

However, there is a luncheon taking place this Thursday, February 19th at 12pm, with experienced entrepreneur Brett Bullington. This event is open to all members, but you must RSVP if you are planning on attending as space is very limited. Check out the calendar for more details.

Also, we will be hosting a BBQ this coming Sunday, February 22nd, from 1-4pm at 6507 El Nido. See calendar for more details.

Mr. Jason Spievak: Tuesday, Feb. 10th at 7pm, Theater & Dance 1701

Tired of studying and being cooped up in the library for midterms? Well come to another one of our meetings this week for a quick study break and some dinner!! Our speaker this week is Jason Spievak, the co-founder and CEO of RingRevenue, a telephony software platform designed for the pay-for-performance advertising market. Prior to RingRevenue, Jason was a director and Chief Financial Officer at CallWave, Inc., (NASDAQ: CALL) a voice-over-internet software and service provider based in Santa Barbara, California. Jason led CallWave’s successful IPO in 2004 and was a key member of the senior team that brought the company to 12 consecutive quarters of revenue growth, GAAP profitability and positive cash flow with more than 750,000 paid subscribers.

Prior to CallWave, Jason was a Vice President in the technology mergers and acquisitions group in Broadview International’s (NYSE: JEF) Silicon Valley office, where he specialized in enterprise software, network infrastructure and internet services transactions. While at Broadview, Jason led or was directly involved with successful M&A transactions and private placements representing over $1.25 billion in aggregate consideration. Before joining Broadview, Jason held product management roles with Netopia (NASDAQ: NTPA), a developer of Internet/Intranet communications products where he helped the company complete its successful IPO in 1996, and also with Nextel Communications’ (NASDAQ: NXTL) wireless data division.

Jason earned his MBA from the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University and his BA from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He lives in Santa Barbara, California with his wife and three children.

Great American Group is a firm located nation-wide that specializes in a wide range of asset management, disposition, and financial services. Mr. Edgar will be giving a presentation on asset based financing and asset valuation, as well as an overview of Great American Group and the opportunities they have for interns and analysts. Meeting Tuesday, January 27th 7pm TD 1701: Mrs. Jonatha King

At this week’s meeting, in coordination with SB Media Group, we will be featuring Jonatha King, CEO of King Communications. Jonatha has over 30 years of experience in PR and Advertising and her company now manages the public relations for very prominent clients in the town such as the Montecito Bank and Trust and the Santa Barbara Airport.

Jonatha will teach us the ins and outs of public relations. Topics she will cover include how the industry works, how a firm operates day to day, tips for making a successful PR campaign, the variety of careers within PR, and how to get those careers after college.
